Over 400 students attended Pre-Apprenticeship Day to explore career pathways and hands-on learning. Learn how Workforce.Miami and industry leaders are shaping Miami’s future workforce.
An Event That Inspired Over 400 Students
On November 6, 2023, over 400 high school students gathered for CTE & M-DCPS Pre-Apprenticeship Day, a dynamic event showcasing the power of work-based learning. Hosted by Career & Technical Education (CTE) and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), the event was filled with career insights, mentorship, and interactive learning.
Adding to the excitement, Papa Keith from 103.5 FM brought his energy, keeping students engaged as they explored opportunities to build meaningful careers.
Industry Leaders Stepping Up
The success of Pre-Apprenticeship Day was made possible by industry leaders and organizations committed to shaping Miami’s future workforce. Companies and associations from a range of sectors came together to introduce students to meaningful career pathways and apprenticeship opportunities.
For example, the Related Group offered insights into careers in construction and property development. Meanwhile, the Greater Miami & The Beaches Hotel Association highlighted growth opportunities in hospitality and tourism. The Florida Department of Transportation presented public sector career paths tied to infrastructure development.
In addition, CareerSource Florida provided valuable guidance on workforce programs and emerging job market trends. Florida Carpenters Trust gave students hands-on exposure to skilled trades and explained the long-term benefits of apprenticeships. Lastly, Miami EdTech underscored the importance of digital skills and introduced students to tech-focused career paths.
Together, these organizations delivered real-world knowledge and inspired students to see the possibilities ahead. Through mentorship, live demonstrations, and open conversations, they showcased how apprenticeships and job training can lead to lasting success.

A Defining Moment: Student Q&A
One of the most impactful moments of the event was the student Q&A session. Young minds boldly asked insightful questions about career pathways, apprenticeships, and how they could develop the skills needed to succeed.
Hearing students express their ambitions and curiosity reinforced the importance of providing clear career guidance and accessible learning opportunities. Employers and mentors were eager to answer, offering advice and encouraging students to take proactive steps toward their futures.

The Future is Bright
A particularly inspiring moment came when former Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP) interns returned—not as students, but as future apprentices. This full-circle experience highlighted how early career exposure and work-based learning lead to real opportunities.
For Workforce.Miami, this event was another step toward its mission of bridging the gap between education and employment. By partnering with local businesses and workforce organizations, we’re ensuring that students have the tools, guidance, and opportunities they need to succeed.
Internship vs Apprenticeship: What’s the Difference?
The event also highlighted an important evolution in work-based learning—many students start with internships and later pursue apprenticeships. While both provide hands-on experience, internships are often shorter and exploratory, whereas apprenticeships are more structured, career-focused, and typically paid.
